To understand the scale of the problem we need to understand the following facts:
- Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) kill 41 million people each year and account for 71% of all deaths worldwide.
- Each year, 15 million people between the ages of 30 and 69 die from a NCD; more than 85% of these "premature" deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
- Cardiovascular diseases account for the majority of NCD deaths, 17.9 million people per year. Cancer is the second leading cause of NCD deaths, killing 9.0 million each year.
- Cardiovascular diseases are the most important cost factor in the global healthcare system with a total annual cost of €770 billion. This is expected to rise to €932 billion by 2030.
